The Barnett Shale is the largest producing natural gas field in America, covering more than 5,000 square miles across 24 counties. It stretches southward from west Dallas, and extends as far west as Pecos County.
The Barnett consists of sedimentary rocks, containing nearly 40 trillion cubic feet of resources. That’s enough energy to power Texas homes for more than 200 years. There are more than 1,987 active rigs in the Barnett Shale today. In fact, these Barnett rigs are responsible for more than 50% of the natural gas from shale production in the United States.
